Trying Something New

I am trying out something new today. No, not tatting. I found my cam and thought about making a short clip. I decided that since I just put a new tablecloth on that old table I sit at, maybe I would not be so ashamed to try video, so here we are. Yes, it has sound. Please excuse the heavy breathing. I was almost on top of the cam and it has a built in microphone.
I restarted the Spring Napkin. I am up to round 3, not far from done. Round 3 has thrown rings. One thing I hate is when I get a thrown ring that has a gap between the ring and the chain. This short video shows what I do to eliminate that problem. Actually, I do this almost everywhere. I am not, by the way, doing front side - back side tatting, though I have.

I think for a first try that the video came out ok. I probably should have a script because I was hesitating a lot. I even almost forgot the word "chain". I also spotted an error. I put the second half stitch under the ring, said don't count it, and started counting at 2. Oops! I am not going to go back and add one stitch.

  1. Thank you so much for the video, it looks great. It is always interesting to see how others tat. Thanks for the tip.

    1. I also like to see how others tat. One lady at that Palmetto Tatters has a method I cannot understand. It looks upside-down. There is a film the Palmetto Tatters sells named "Tatting Hands". I have a copy. I can put that on and watch and listen for hours. It is narrated by Georgia Seitz and shows many hands and how they tat. It is well worth the little bit of money.

  2. Nicely done, Tim! I will try your tip today, as I will be working on a pattern with thrown rings. I never think to post my shuttle when closing rings. Does it really make a difference? I have managed to remember to do it a few times, but didn't really see a difference.

    1. I did a couple of experiments with posting the shuttle. Someone had said it makes it easier to undo if needed, but I don't find that. However, if you look at a normal ring, the last stitch seems to drop away. Posting the shuttle appears to pick it back up into place.

  3. Good to see you branching out - videos & visuals are more in demand than textual posts!
Perhaps you would be interested in a post about posting and thrown rings - an experiment I tried out with Renulek's 2016 doily - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.in/2016/06/a-post-about-post-reposted.html
Oh, and your hands are prettier than mine :-D

    1. I did go to the address. I think I remember seeing that quite a while back. It is still useful information. All the data you have collected through the years begs the question, "When is the book coming out?"

    1. Thanks, Michelle. I guess the voice is OK. I was sitting almost on the microphone on the webcam. As long as it is intelligible.

  5. Lovely video, Tim! You know, the French reverse the order of the stitches. I wonder if those barenaked spaces are part of their motivation? Still thinking about that Ham. It is good to see you up and about and tatting!
