Continuing With The Ice Drop

I finally got around to trying something with the doubled ice drop. I want to use it as a sun catcher, so I put it in a 3" ring. As it turns out at present, it is too loose. I need to use fewer stitches in the chain so it will suspend without sagging. I have a feeling it is going to sag some anyway. Those gems are not light.

I will probably remove the dark blue and try again. I don't know if it will be ready by Tat Days. If it is, I want to put it on the display table. I am also thinking about a way to partially cover the steel ring. I'll work on it.

  1. I think it looks awesome!!! :)
I totally understand the sagging part due to the heavy glass!! Here are links to a couple of very large suncatchers I did for Christmas last year. Both have heavy glass beads in them. The autumn colored one shows the sagging at the bottom, but my friend loves it and has it hanging anyway. ;) http://tattedchristmassecrets.blogspot.com/2016/12/another-completed-christmas-secret.html

    1. Those are gorgeous (and I love raspberry). You have more connections holding yours up. Perhaps that is what I need. Then too, I am trying to make this as I go, inventing something that may or may not work. I am really not a designer, but I wanted to try. I think the chains just need to be shorter. The weight is the double gem in the ice drop. It is really concentrated. Thanks for the links!

    2. The weight of my glass beads was my concern also. I too am not really a designer, but I figured I would need to have strong tatting to bear the weight and it had to pull hard enough to suspend the heavy glass beads to keep them in place. ;) Can't wait to see what else you come up with!!! :) It takes lots of tries and tons of thinking!! :)

    3. Whatever I do will have to wait until after Tat Days. I get to assist with a couple of classes and I need to practice those patterns. I wish everyone could join us. So much fun.

  2. Using two gems would be very heavy, you might have to do two chains connected to the ring, like a Celtic design which might give it strength to hold the gems, the weight might keep it sagging no matter what you do
